Tennessee trail closure questions

Where do the state park trail closures come from?

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation’s public trail closures map, which park staff update.

Why is a trail closed?

The reason is shown when TDEC gives one, such as a washout, repairs or construction.

Are wild caves listed?

No. Most Tennessee caves are on private land or closed to protect bats. Caves inside national parks appear here when the Park Service posts a closure.

Does Tennessee have avalanche forecasts?

No. There is no avalanche forecast center for the Southern Appalachians. Winter hazards in the Smokies show up as road closures and weather alerts.

Is a trail open if it is not listed?

Not necessarily. Check with the park before you go; conditions change faster than any feed.
