Thresholds

When an event page opens

An event page opens automatically when the latest official readings cross one of these lines, and it updates every 5 minutes until the event ends. After that it stays here as a record.

  • Power outages: 10,000 or more meters out across Tennessee utilities reporting to ODIN. Ends after two hours under 1,000.
  • Severe storms: a tornado report, 15 or more storm reports in one day, three tornado warnings at once, or a tornado or flash flood emergency.
  • River flooding: a gauge at moderate or major flood, or 5 or more at minor flood at once.
  • Earthquakes: magnitude 3.0 or more in Tennessee, or 4.0 or more nearby.
  • Wildfires: 200 acres or more and not yet contained.

Questions about Tennessee event pages

What counts as a major event in Tennessee?

A statewide power outage of 10,000 or more meters, a severe storm day with a tornado report or many storm reports, river flooding at moderate or major stage, an earthquake of magnitude 3.0 or more in Tennessee, or a wildfire of 200 acres or more that is not contained.

Are event pages written by a person?

No. They open, update and close on their own from official readings, with limits of one new page per type and two in total per day.

Do event pages stay up after the event ends?

Yes. The page freezes as a record of the readings taken during the event.
